The sections are plastic but adequate quality. The directions are very clear most of the time. The downside with this toy is that the screws don't remain tight no matter how so much you tighten them. This makes it very irritating to work on. I'm to hand and so is my son, and we now have had constructing toys in the past with so much success, however this product does not keep together.

Don't purchase this erector set - buy one with metal parts and steel screws. I will have to have listened to the other reviewer who said that the plastic screws don't keep tight no matter how tight you're making them. The pieces just get bathroom toiletse and wobble and fall apart. My son used to be uninterested in 15 minutes and I'm returning the set.
